"Weaving Mistakes into the Larger Pattern" on the Mississippi Gulf Coast

Hurricane Katrina was a horrific tragedy, but a friend of mine who's visiting the Gulf Coast this weekend reminded me of some of the ways in which the improvisational spirit has taken this Great Mistake of nature and woven it into the ongoing thread of human creativity and reaffirmation.

Rather than raze the remains of the venerable live oaks along U.S. 90 on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, civic leaders and regional artists converted many of the trunks into spectacular sculptures of eagles, seahorses, marlins, and other aquatic life.

Instead of wiping out all traces of the giant oaks, the planners of this artistic enterprise have created a new attraction for visitors and a tribute to the improvisational quest to "weave mistakes into the larger pattern."
